BACKGROUND

UNICEF has called out the criticality of early childhood education among children in India.
“Participation in good quality preschools leads to higher school readiness levels”
Early childhood education positively impacts attendance, retention, and learning of children in elementary and higher education.
“From `multi-tasked' Anganwadi Centres’ to `demand-driven' private preschools, the quality of preschool education is not developmentally appropriate for children”
Despite the recognition of the importance of ECE by the Government of India, the challenges in implementation still remain. There are still substantial numbers of children not enrolled in preschools.
"Design a flexible play based foundational curriculum for 3 to 8 year olds along an early childhood continuum"
Preschools play an important role in shaping a child’s mind. They should provide a structured learning environment, and a child-centric curriculum. In this approach, the child is given the time and freedom to explore and learn, unlike in a teacher-centric curriculum.
APPROACH
Since our inception in 2019, we have been collaborating with the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) department of the Government and the school Education Department to impart free, Montessori-based English medium education to children enrolled in rural Anganwadi centres and Government schools.
Our free education programme currently covers 530 children enrolled in 21 Anganwadi centres/Government schools across Tamil Nadu (Krishnagiri District) and Karnataka (Kolar and Chamarajanagar Districts).
In our model, we deploy the Montessori material kit in each Anganwadi. We also empower women in these villages recruit through employment and skilling and deploy them as teachers in the Anganwadis that we support.
We also take on infrastructure improvement projects in the Anganwadis and Government schools that we support. So far, we have renovated 15 Anganwadis and built 3 new classrooms /Anganwadis across Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
The results of our efforts are very encouraging, as evidenced by the children showing rapid progress and blossoming into independent and confident human beings. This has also been validated by the testimonials we have received from the parents of our students.
We have partnered with Kreedo Early Childhood Solutions, a Bangalore based company which has been providing Montessori-based preschool solutions to over 3500 preschools, impacting 7,00,000 students over the past several years. They provide us with the material, the curriculum, learning objectives, teacher training, and a structured assessment framework to track the progress of each child across various parameters. Each Amyga teacher has access to an app on which they track student progress
